Sitting in the Rubble

Nichole Nordeman is one of my favorite singer/songwriters on the planet.

I’ve been a fan since I was a pre-teen and one of the coolest moments of my life was when she agreed to write an endorsement for my book Stories from Webb.

One of her more recent hits was “The Unmaking” and the chorus gets me every time.

This is the unmaking
Beauty and the breaking
Had to lose myself to find out who you are
Before each beginning
There must be an ending
Sitting in the rubble
I can see the stars

Every time I hear it I’m hit by the visual of those last two lines. “Sitting in the rubble, I can see the stars”.

Life knocks each of us down in different ways. Sometimes we’re left sitting in rubble and wondering what was the purpose. But maybe, just maybe, when things are torn down it’s to give us a view into something we were missing otherwise.

When the roof is gone, we notice the stars.

Today maybe you’re like me and you just need that reminder that even in the midst of what feels broken, there is purpose.
