Self Care is More Than a Bubble Bath
When most people hear the words “self care,” they picture a candlelit bubble bath with soft music playing in the background. While that sounds wonderful, self care is so much more than that. Taking care of yourself is deeply personal and often looks very different from person to person. It is nuanced, intentional, and necessary.
If you don’t take care of you, you cannot take care of anyone else. Self care is not selfish. It is essential.
So as I reflect on this idea of self-care and what it looks like for me, I know it’s always changing. Why? Because I’m always changing. But I did want to share a few practical ways to practice self care that go beyond the surface.
1. Take a Tech Detox
Unplug from your phone, social media, and email for a few hours or even an entire weekend. Give your mind space to breathe without the constant noise of notifications.
2. Go for a Walk in Nature
Something as simple as stepping outside, breathing fresh air, and noticing the beauty around you can calm your nervous system and reset your perspective.
3. Schedule a Therapy Session
Talking with a therapist is one of the most powerful ways to care for your emotional health. Having someone to listen, guide, and challenge you can bring clarity and healing.
4. Book a Massage or Stretch Session
Caring for your body matters too. Relieving tension in your muscles can release stress you didn’t even realize you were holding onto.
5. Disconnect for a Weekend
Plan a getaway or even a quiet staycation. Put up an “away” message, silence your phone, and give yourself permission to rest without guilt.
6. Take a Personal Day
If your schedule is packed, sometimes the best gift you can give yourself is a day off. Use the time for rest, hobbies, or simply slowing down.
7. Move Your Body
Exercise is not just about fitness. It is about feeling strong and energized. Whether you like yoga, dancing, running, or lifting weights, find something that makes you feel alive.
8. Journal or Reflect
Grab a notebook and write down your thoughts, your gratitude, or the things weighing on your heart. Putting words on paper often lightens the mental load.
9. Eat a Meal Without Distractions
Sit down at a table, without a phone or TV, and actually taste your food. Slow, mindful eating can be a form of self care that nourishes both your body and soul.
10. Connect With Someone Who Lifts You Up
Call a friend, visit a family member, or spend time with someone who fills your heart. Healthy relationships are a form of self care too.
Self care is not a one-size-fits-all checklist. And don’t get me a wrong, a good bubble bath can feel life changing! But what works for me might not work for you, and that is the beauty of it. The key is to be intentional, to listen to what your body and soul are asking for, and to give yourself permission to care for you.
Because when you are cared for, you are stronger, healthier, and more present for the people who depend on you.
