The Power of Silence

We don’t talk about silence enough.

Maybe because it feels uncomfortable.
Maybe because it doesn’t give us quick answers.
Maybe because in a world that rewards noise, silence feels like we’re falling behind.

But silence has a way of teaching us things that noise never could.

And if we’re honest, many of us are sitting in it right now.

The Silence We Choose

There are moments when we choose silence.

When we decide not to respond to the comment.
When we hold back from engaging in the negativity.
When we pause instead of reacting.

That kind of silence is strength.

It’s the discipline to not let every thought become a response.
It’s the wisdom to know that not every situation deserves your energy.
It’s the awareness that your peace matters more than proving a point.

Silence, in those moments, isn’t weakness.
It’s leadership.

The Silence We Sit In

Then there’s the silence we don’t choose.

The quiet after you didn’t get the promotion.
The stillness when your hard work goes unnoticed.
The moments where you’re pouring everything you have into something… and hearing nothing back.

That silence can feel loud.

It can make you question your worth.
Your impact.
Your direction.

You start wondering…

Am I doing enough?
Am I enough?
And that kind of silence can be heavy.

But here’s what I’ve learned.

Silence doesn’t always mean absence.
Sometimes it means growth is happening where you can’t yet see it.

Roots grow in silence.
Strength is built in silence.
Character is formed in silence.

Just because it’s quiet doesn’t mean it’s empty.

The Silence of Standing Alone

And then there’s a different kind of silence.

The silence you feel when you stand up for something
and no one stands with you.

You speak truth.
You advocate for kids.
You push for what’s right.

And you look around… and it feels like you’re the only one.

That silence can be isolating.

But don’t confuse silence with lack of impact.

Sometimes your courage gives others permission.
Even if they’re not ready to stand beside you yet.

Sometimes your voice is planting seeds you may never see grow.

And sometimes, doing what’s right means doing it without applause.

What Silence Can Teach Us

If we let it, silence can shape us.

It can teach us patience when we want immediacy.
It can teach us trust when we want control.
It can teach us purpose when we feel uncertain.

But only if we don’t rush to fill it.

We’re so quick to turn on the TV.
Scroll our phones.
Distract ourselves from the quiet.

But what if we leaned into it instead?

What if we sat in it long enough to hear what it’s trying to tell us?

An Invitation

So today, I want to challenge you (and myself).

Don’t run from the silence.

Sit in it.
Listen to it.
Learn from it.

Because sometimes the most important clarity
the deepest growth
and the strongest version of who you’re becoming

is found in the quiet.
