The Power of Feedback
One of the most important tools for growth is feedback. Yet too often, we treat it as something that just happens to us. We wait for our boss to bring it up in an evaluation, or for a colleague to casually offer it in passing. But real growth doesn’t come from sitting back. It comes when we actively seek out feedback from others.
When we open ourselves up to feedback, we’re admitting a powerful truth: we don’t always have the answers, and we don’t always do things the best way. That kind of humility is what creates space for growth. But here’s the catch: where we get feedback from matters just as much as the feedback itself.
If the only people speaking into our lives are those who only ever cheer us on, we’ll miss the chance to see our blind spots. Encouragement is important, but if it’s the only thing we hear, we can easily get caught in a “positivity loop” where we start believing we’ve already arrived. True growth requires people who will have the tough conversations with us. People who are willing to say, “I love what you’re doing here, but have you thought about this?” or “I see how hard you’re working, but I think you may be missing something.”
At the same time, not every voice deserves the same weight in your life. Just because someone offers feedback doesn’t mean you’re required to take it to heart. That’s why it’s critical to be intentional about who you invite to speak into your work and your life. Seek out those who both encourage and challenge you. The people who want to see you become the best version of yourself, not just the most comfortable version.
The truth is, you’ll never grow into who you’re meant to be if you only listen to what’s easy to hear. Growth takes stretching, refining, and sometimes being humbled. So don’t just wait for feedback. Go out and ask for it. Invite it in. And make sure the people you’re listening to are the ones who are committed to helping you reach your full potential.
Because at the end of the day, feedback isn’t about proving you’re wrong. It’s about helping you become who you’re meant to be.
