3 Ways to Connect Deeper with People You Work With
One of the most important parts of any workplace is the relationships we build with those around us. When we feel connected to the people we work with, trust grows, collaboration strengthens, and the workplace becomes a place we actually enjoy showing up to. But connection does not just happen. It takes intentional effort.
Here are three simple but powerful ways to connect deeper with the people you work alongside every day.
1. Listen Beyond the Surface
Too often we listen just enough to respond, but not enough to truly understand. The next time a coworker is talking, pause your inner dialogue and really tune in. Ask follow up questions. Pay attention to their tone and body language. Show genuine interest. People feel valued when they know they are being heard, and listening well can turn an everyday conversation into a deeper connection.
2. Celebrate the Person, Not Just the Work
It is easy to only recognize people for their accomplishments on the job, but do not forget to celebrate who they are as human beings. Remember birthdays, cheer on their kids’ soccer games, or check in on how they are doing outside of work. When we take the time to see and appreciate the whole person, we build relationships rooted in care and respect, not just productivity.
3. Share Your Own Story
Connection is a two way street. If you want people to feel safe opening up, you have to be willing to share pieces of your own story too. That does not mean spilling your entire life story at once. It means being authentic and letting others see the real you. Vulnerability builds trust, and trust is the foundation for any meaningful connection.
The truth is, we all crave to be known and valued. Taking small steps to listen well, celebrate people, and share yourself can transform not just your workplace, but the way you experience it too.
