What We Focus On

Every Wednesday around mid-day, I pause for a few minutes to take stock of something most people never think about…what I’ve been focusing on.

What have I been talking about this week?

What have I been thinking about?

Because whatever we talk about, think about, and dwell on… we empower.

If my conversations and thoughts have been full of complaining, self-doubt, or negativity, then that’s what I’m giving life to. That’s what I’m allowing to grow. And if it’s not making me better … if it’s not helping me become more grounded, grateful, or intentional … then I know it’s time to shift.

It’s so easy to go through the week on autopilot. We get busy, things get stressful, and before we know it, we’ve spent three days focusing on everything that’s wrong instead of everything that’s right. That’s why I’ve built this habit: my Wednesday mid-day reset. It’s a simple, intentional pause to ask myself, “What’s been getting most of my energy this week?”

If the answer doesn’t feel healthy or helpful, I make a change immediately.

Here are a few simple ways you can do the same:

1. Set a Midweek Alarm or Reminder

Put a quick reminder in your phone every Wednesday (or whatever day works best for you) that says, “What are you focusing on?” It doesn’t have to take long! Even 60 seconds of reflection can redirect your mindset.

2. Keep a “Focus Note”

I use the Notes app on my phone, but you could use a sticky note or journal. Write down what’s been taking up space in your mind this week. Seeing it written out helps you notice patterns. Are you spending more time thinking about problems or possibilities?

3. Replace It with Gratitude

If your focus has drifted toward negativity, don’t just stop there. Replace it. Take a few minutes to write down three things that are going right. Gratitude has this incredible power to reset your perspective and remind you of what’s still good, even in the chaos.

Our thoughts shape our reality.

Our words set the tone for our days.

So today, pause for a moment. Check your focus.

If it’s not helping you grow, shift it, and watch how quickly everything else begins to change.
