Why ‘Bandaids’ Might Be the Ultimate Workplace Survival Song

Okay, let me start by saying this loud and clear: I absolutely love my current supervisor. He’s supportive, empowering, and the kind of leader that makes you want to do your best work every single day.

But… let’s just say I haven’t always been that lucky.

I’ve definitely worked for a few “leaders” who made me question my life choices. You know the ones…the supervisor who micromanages every detail, the one who takes credit for your ideas, or the one who gives “feedback” that’s really just an insult wearing a fake smile.

So when I heard Katy Perry’s new single “Bandaids,” I couldn’t help but laugh. Sure, it’s about heartbreak, but honestly? It could just as easily be about surviving a supervisor who sucks the joy right out of your day.

“You put a bandaid on a bullet hole, tryna stop me from bleeding out…”

If that doesn’t perfectly describe the kind of boss who messes everything up and then sends a “thanks for your flexibility!” email, I don’t know what does.

Those “bandaids” might be in the form of pizza parties, inspirational quotes in the breakroom, or an “employee of the month” certificate that was printed five minutes before the meeting. But you still walk out thinking, this bandaid ain’t fixing anything, Karen.

“You said you’d always lift me up, but you just let me down…”

Whew. That one hits. Because how many times have we been promised growth, opportunities, or “we’ll revisit that raise soon” only to realize it’s never actually coming?

Sometimes the people who say they’ll build you up are the very ones who chip away at your confidence.

“All I wanted was to heal, but you love to rip me open again…”

We’ve all had that boss who just can’t let things go. The one who has to bring up that mistake from six months ago every time you’re in a meeting. (Ma’am, I already apologized for the typo in the newsletter. We can move on now.)

“Now I’m picking up the pieces…”

That’s the moment you realize: you deserve better. You deserve a leader who values you, trusts you, and helps you grow instead of tearing you down.

Because leadership — real leadership — isn’t about control or criticism. It’s about creating space where people can thrive.

So maybe Katy Perry didn’t mean for “Bandaids” to become an anthem for workplace survival, but I’m officially claiming it as mine for all those “been there, barely survived that” supervisor experiences.

And if you’ve ever had to sing through gritted teeth while updating your resume on your lunch break, just know, you’re not alone.

Blast the song. Laugh a little. Heal a lot.

Because sometimes, the best way to deal with a bad boss is to sing your heart out, remember your worth, and refuse to settle for bandaids when what you deserve is real healing.
