Time Away Matters

If I’m being honest, this is a lesson I’m still learning. I love what I do. I love pouring into people, helping teams build better culture, and encouraging others to step into their leadership. But what I’ve found, time and time again, is that when I don’t pause to take care of myself, I eventually have nothing left to give anyone else.

We live in a world that glorifies hustle. That tells us if we aren’t always producing, we’re falling behind. But what good is success if you’re too tired, too disconnected, or too burned out to enjoy it with the people who matter most?

Taking time away from work isn’t lazy. It’s wise. And it’s necessary. When we step away—whether for a quiet morning walk, dinner with friends, or an afternoon playing superheroes with our kids—we refill our own cup. We remind ourselves that our value isn’t tied to our productivity. And when we do that, we show up better for our families, our teams, and ourselves.

If you’re not sure where to start, here are a few simple things that have helped me:

✅ Set boundaries with your time. Don’t be afraid to block out time on your calendar for rest or family. Protect that time the same way you would an important meeting.

✅ Be fully present. When you’re with your family or friends, put the phone down. The emails and texts can wait. Give your people the gift of your full attention.

✅ Find what refuels you—and make time for it. Maybe it’s reading, working out, spending time outside, or just sitting in silence. Whatever fills your soul, be intentional about making it a priority.

At the end of the day, you can’t pour into others when you’re running on empty. Take care of yourself, so you can take care of those you love and lead. You were never meant to do it all, all the time.
