The Thief of Joy

They say comparison is the thief of joy, and I believe it. Because I live it.

If I’m honest, I struggle almost daily with feeling like I’m not enough. Like I’m behind where I’m “supposed” to be. Like everyone else is running ahead while I’m stuck catching my breath.

It’s so easy to look at someone else’s success and think, Well… now my effort doesn’t matter as much. But here’s the truth: your effort matters. Every step forward matters. Every ounce of energy you’ve poured into your work, your people, and your growth matters.

Recently, I saw a viral post about a teacher who spent $2,000 decorating and prepping her classroom. Her room looked incredible, and she deserves every bit of the praise and celebration she’s received. But here’s what’s equally true: you don’t have to do that to be a great teacher. Greatness isn’t measured in dollars spent or Instagram-worthy photos. It’s measured in the way you love your students, the way you show up, the way you give your best with what you have.

When we compare ourselves to someone else’s highlight reel, we rob ourselves of the ability to enjoy the moment we’re in, the growth we’ve made, and the journey we’re on. The truth is, there will always be someone doing more, faster, or better in certain areas. That doesn’t take away from your progress or your worth.

So celebrate the wins of others—and mean it. Cheer them on. But also remember to celebrate your own steps forward.

Your journey matters just as much.

Stop letting comparison steal the joy that’s already yours.
